The natural vegetation that is utilised in the production of wicker furniture comes either from those swamp lands along the coast that are uncultivated or from the infertile hilly sand and clay belt areas that are not suited for traditional agriculture. Resources that are not otherwise being utilised could be converted to cash for those who gain employment and to foreign exchange for the country. This industry would also certainly contribute to reducing rural poverty, increasing rural household income and generally increasing the well being of rural communities.

The social benefits of this industry are therefore employment creation, increased family income and as a result, increased nutrition and improved health. It is estimated that apart from the 16 employees, this business creates indirect employment for at least 50 persons and the total number 
of beneficiaries would be about 200 persons.
